Safety Belts and Child Restraints (Florida Law)
The safety of our youngest passengers is a top priority. Our service follows all Florida child passenger safety laws and best-practice guidelines to ensure every child rides safely and securely.
Florida Child Safety Requirements
Under Florida law:
- Seat belts or child restraint devices are required for:
- Drivers of motor vehicles
- All front-seat passengers
- All children under 18 years of age
- Children age 5 and under must be properly secured in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device.
- Children ages 0 to 3 must be secured in a separate carrier child restraint device.
- Children ages 4 through 5 must be secured in:
- A separate carrier
- Or a booster seat
The safest seat for any child is one that:
- Fits the child’s height and weight
- Is correctly installed
- Fits properly in the vehicle
- Is used correctly on every trip
Rear-Facing Car Seats
A rear-facing car seat provides the highest level of protection for infants and young children.
- Recommended for children under age 2, or until they reach the maximum height or weight allowed by the manufacturer
- Infant-only seats are used rear-facing only
- Convertible and 3-in-1 seats allow children to remain rear-facing longer due to higher size limits
Forward-Facing Car Seats
- Children should remain in a rear-facing seat as long as possible before transitioning to a forward-facing car seat
- Typically appropriate once the child exceeds rear-facing limits, often around age 2 or 3
- Forward-facing seats must be properly secured and adjusted for the child’s size
Booster Seats
- Florida law requires children ages 4 through 5 to use a booster seat or other approved child restraint
- Booster seats position the vehicle’s seat belt correctly once a child outgrows a forward-facing car seat
- Booster seats should always be used in the back seat
Seat Belt Safety
A child should remain in a booster seat until the vehicle seat belt fits properly:
- The lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach
- The shoulder belt must rest across the chest and shoulder, not the neck or face
- The child must be able to sit upright for the entire ride
